Hay River PTUB Race Brings Out Yk Skiers Thirty two Yellowknife skiers, ranging in age from 7 to forty-something” traveled to Hay River on April 5th to compete in the “Spectacular NWT 25th Annual PTUB Ski Race” hosted by the Hay River Ski Club. Skiers participated in both classic and free technique races during the two day event, but the highlight of the weekend for most of the skiers was the sprint race. Racing on a newly designed sprint course, skiers competed head to head against skiers with equal ability. The course was challenging for some of the younger and older skiers, as it consisted of a steep downhill with a “jump”, a tight corner and an uphill sprint to the finish line. Prior to and following the sprint event, many of the skiers spent hours on this hill, practicing their newly acquired “ski jumping” ability. Almost every skier brought home at least one medal. Congratulations to: Grace Storrie, Richard Storrie, Katia Lariviere, Nicolas Bennett, Michaelis Hurst, Scott VanderMeer, John Buckland, Rhonda Buckland. Nicole Terrier and Veronique Theriault; who were multiple gold medal winners; James Thomas, Matthew Lariviere, Mary Buckland and Ashley Mulders, who brought home at least one gold medal; Dominque Bennett, Alison Buckland, Annie Thomas, Holly Nusse, Alicia Tumchewics, Hanna Wilson, Nicole Dion, Michael Hurst and William Buckland were multiple medal winners: and Aiden Forsythe, Samuel Storrie, Jamie Lariviere, Cayley Thomas, Elizabeth Thomas, Tara Dunsford, Shannon Jennings and Alice Storrie, who each brought home one medal, in addition to their sprint medals. Special mention has to go to Jamie Lariviere, who would have had a much better race if he had not broken a pole at the beginning of the race, and skied with only one pole until he was able to find a suitable branch in the bush beside the trail. He finished with a strong 4th place finish in the 5Km free technique race, much to the dismay of one of the Yellowknife coaches, who lamented the fact that she was passed during her race by “a guy using a tree branch as a pole”. |
